JVC's top-of-the-line FS-SD1000 executive microsystem contains a unique satellite-subwoofer pairing built on a radical speaker design for an expanded sound field and improved sound definition--the kind of sound that exceeds what you'd expect from the unit's size and shape. Housed inside cylindrical, pole-shaped aluminum enclosures are extremely slim speakers, which provide an extended high-frequency response and rich ambience. The pole shape reduces standing-wave generation for a smooth response, and reduced diffraction improves radiation efficiency.

The pole-shaped speakers make use of innovative materials and include high-performance magnets for more audio impact. The FS-SD1000 also boasts a 60-watt powered subwoofer for deep bass. The sub uses a 6.28-inch woofer, an edgewise-wound eight-layer voice coil, and volume control with phase switch.

July 2001,I had gone to an electronic store to buy a high-end, well sized sound system.When I heard this unit play I knew that size does not matter but performance.It beat everything in the store...Boss,Marantz,Pioneer,Denon,Yamaha you name it.I am glad that I did not vacillate otherwise I will not be writing this review of appreciation, as this unit is no longer being made.I never liked compact system since college days.They are easily stolen,produce medium sound quality , never being impressed by them.They are good for the budget conscious buyer.But this unit though compact and pricey, performed beyond all I have known and still does.Please read below as the unit continues to hold its own to this day.


Design: Intelligent,neat and pretty.Looks and feels pretty and delicate.It's one of those investments you make and do not regret you did.It adds to the peace and serenity of our living room as you step into the living room.Complements every piece of decor in our living room.The unit blends innoucuously with everythingelse until it is called into play, then all heads turn towards it.Remarkable!!!

Sound: Exceedingly rich,clean, velvety and silky.When I turn this unit on, conversation stops briefly, not once or twice but everytime.Our guests abruptly stop talking, wondering where the music is coming from.The silence is very palpable but soothing and tranquil, puctuated by the music which floats smoothly in the air.With much amazement and somewhat embarrased, they ask where the music is coming from.They are overwhelmingly impressed when the source is revealed.Music they already know is refreshingly pleasing once again.The set is good for all kind of music but I love it best with oldies from the 60's to 80's.The bass tone is warm and rich while the tenor is silk and smooth.The subwoofer feels up our 3600 home with ease if I decide to turn up the volume.What else can you ask for.Nothing but peaceful sound, and it does deliver that.

Durability: I bought this unit in 2001 and have enjoyed every minute I have played it.Unfortunately in 2008,My dear nephews visiting thought it was a toy.One of them dropped one of the speakers which gave it a small dent.I wish the material the speakers were made of was hardy.Well, this is no kids toy, it is meant for those who can keep pricey pieces.The sound it brings out is still very soothing just as I heard it on the first day at the store.The unit is no longer available otherwise,I would have changed the speaker.

Cons:The AM does not work great without the string external antennae you have to tie up somewhere.Makes the unit untidy with the antennae.This makes it look like one of those antique LP players with a radio in the 70s.Not wishing to spoil the beauty of the unit,I do not use the antennae.I get my AM/FM from other sources e.g. bedroom alarm clock,kitchen unit.I wish it had a concealed antennae like the very dependable 2002 Linconln continental CE which is no longer being made, incidentally.

Recommendation:If you are lucky to find one, buy it first then ask questions later if you want to keep it.If you ask or think first, it will be gone.The unit is ageless!!!
My guess is that like the Lincoln Continental 2002, it was economics for the manufacturer at the expense of the consumers satisfaction.

I bought this for my wife for our bedroom, she loves the glass and this unit has a great classy look. As far as sound goes this is not a powerful unit in the least, its fine for a small room at low volume. If you want amazing and powerful sound go somewhere else.

I have been a hi-fi afficionado for almost a half-century since the early days when AR speakers were truly boutique, revolutionary designs costing the equivalent of several thousand dollars (adjusted for inflation).

I bought this stereo soon after it came out a few years ago. Frankly, I bought it for the amazing industrial design. Since it was so beautiful, I was willing to be more lenient with its sound quality.

What a completely positive surprise it was when I got it home and set it up! Given its compact size and approx. $500 price tag, the sound quality is superb across a broad range of music, from classical to rock! It can be adjusted for flat reproduction (eg. for violin concertos) to a brighter feel (eg. for jazz vocals) to fit a wide range of music and tastes.

The FS-SD1000 can easily fill a large living room with excellent quality, lush sound. (Of course, if you want floor shaking, building vibrating, stadium type volume, just get a couple of 5 foot high JBL club speakers...you have no business with compact systems).

We were so happy with the system that a year later, we bought another one for the office. This particular JVC is one of the classic products that should one day reside in a Museum of Modern Art collection as an outstanding example of great design combined with fabulous functionality.

I reveived my FS-SD1000 today. It was easy to set up. I first put in my CD of the group Texas. Sounded beautiful. Then I put in Michael Buble - Sounded great. I am about to get my cd of The Killers - I am sure it would be amazing. The two speakers put out crystal clear sound and the bass is strong withiut being over bearing. I could not be more satisfied with my purchase. I would recommend this to anyone who has an office or dorm room who needs a smaller system without any sacrifice of sound.

I just bought JVC FS-SD1000 for our master bedroom, and while I cannot comment on its durability yet, I can comment on its looks and the sound.

The system looks beautiful and produces great sound. Unlike many other micro systems, this one does not have chunky boxy speakers, but rather has two elegantly styled pillar-shaped speakers and a powered subwoofer, which can be put out of the view. The two speakers produce clear highs and midrange, and the subwoofer produces very good deep bass even on the medium setting. The subwoofer also has an automatic on/off feature that turns it on when the system is on and turns it off after 5 minutes of no signal to save energy.

However; given the beautiful looks and great sound, the system comes with a remote that looks like it was designed by someone with an agenda to balance all of the pro's of the system with at least one con. The remote is a tapered cheap looking piece of WHITE plastic (the system color is aluminum), with gray buttons and no glow-in-the-dark feature. My old mid-90's JVC micro system, which broke down and had to be thrown away, had a better looking remote. I definitely do not want anything like that remote sitting anywhere near the system, so I will probably get a nice looking learning remote to consolidate all of the remote (including this system's disgusting JVC remote) into one.

Except for the remote, I really like this system, and Overstock.com had the best deal for it out of all the merchants offering this system.
